The Transition From Play Money To Real Money In Poker
By Graham Maddison
I have been playing online poker and casino games for some years now. When I started out I joined a number of different sites to play online poker. At first, I was only playing the “play money” games which to all intense and purposes was for entertainment only whilst I tried to master the art of playing poker and got used to reading how others played, you know, looking out for what is commonly known as “tells”, trying to read if a player is bluffing or not. Unlike live poker, playing online is a whole new ball game. You do learn the basics when playing with play money, but it is almost impossible to read any “tells” simply by virtue of the fact that you are using “play money” and because the money used has no real value, almost everyone you are playing against will call or bet on the unlikeliest of hands commonly known as “rags” which is something you would not or at least should not do, when playing for real money. The trouble is, when playing against players who play the “rags” they will undoubtedly at some point get lucky or if not, they simply refund their stack with more play money. There were many times that whilst trying to play seriously, I folded a winning hand when someone went all in with lets say 7 - 2 unsuited (the worst possible hand in poker). A bluff I hear you say. Well yes, but with play money tables it is very common for almost the whole table to go “all in” - some will have good hands, but the majority are in reality just playing bingo, hoping their numbers come up. Once you feel you have mastered the game of poker, this type of play becomes frustrating. It is now time to either continue playing with the idiots (but this becomes boring), or make the transition to real money games. The transition from play money to real money in poker can seem a little daunting for some people, nervous in the knowledge that they now have to play with their own hard earned cash. At this point it is worth noting, that playing poker for real money is gambling and as such, you should never gamble with any money that you can’t afford to lose. This is just common sense but is something many people choose to ignore when starting out in online gambling be it poker, bingo or casino’s etc. The first thing you should do when making the transition is check out the various poker sites that offer “low table buy in” by this I mean find a site where it will only cost you pennies as apposed to pounds or dollars to join a tournament or game. This is essential to your survival as a beginner as this is the next stage in your learning curve. It is worth mentioning, that some sites offer new players exclusivity to certain tables which basically means that you have the assurance that you will not be playing against professionals who will all too readilly take your money and run. Everyone you play against at these tables are at the same level of experience as you. Having found such a site, you will be required to register a “real money account” and for this you will need to give your credit or bank card details. This bit is important, unlike play money games, you must register with your real name in order for any winnings to be paid to you. Don’t worry, your real name is not displayed at the tables, for this you will have an alias or screen name. Some sites will on registering, automatically load your account with some “free money” without you needing to make a deposit. Most however, require you to make a small deposit at which time they will give you some free money also. There are plenty of offers around for first time depositors. Okay, you now have your real money account and you are keen to get started. As I mentioned earlier, the best place to start and get the feel for real money games is by joining tournaments or tables with a low buy-in thereby minimizing your risk. Many sites also have “Freerolls” tournaments which are free to join and some of which are exclusive to newcomers (remember though not all necomers are new to poker, they may just be new to the site) There is absolutely nothing to stop you joining the higher stake games, but I would only recommend this if you are super confident. It is worth mentioning. that when playing in “freerolls” some of the play will be similar to that you have already experienced in “play money” games. Because it cost nothing to join the game, some people take chances they wouldn’t ordinarily do. You will still notice however a marked difference to the play money games you have been used to. The best tip here is to try and play a tight game in the early stages, let the idiots catch themselves out, believe me it doesn’t take long and very soon, you can settle down to playing real poker. Enjoy your poker experience and remember, practice makes perfect. I hope this article has been of benefit to you in some small way. Graham Maddison Copyright © Graham Maddison-2009

I have never played poker for real money, I just stick to playing bingo. I believe that even though you can win tons more money in poker you can also lose a ton more if you are unsure when to stop.
